Evelyn M. Young, a beloved resident of Gulfport, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2023 in Gulfport, at the age of 95. Mrs. Young was born in a log cabin in Summit, Mississippi on October 26, 1927 and was the daughter of a Sharecropper.
She attended and graduated school in a one-room schoolhouse in Ruth, Mississippi. She then earned her Associates Degree from Jeff Davis Community College. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse for over 30 years. Mrs. Young dedicated her life to caring for others and touching the lives of many patients who received her compassionate care.
Family was very important to her. During her husband's military career, she would always join and was very active in the family services at each military base. She was a caregiver, always looking after others and making sure that everyone around her was taken care of and comfortable.
In addition to being a caregiver, Mrs. Young had a wide range of interests. She enjoyed being a ham radio operator which helped her connect with people from all walks of life. She also served as a Cub Scout den mother which allowed her to impart lessons of kindness and responsibility to the young Scouts under her care.
Mrs. Young was deeply rooted in faith and in the Baptist community where she derived much joy from serving others and forging new relationships.
Mrs. Evelyn M. Young touched many lives and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Elbert Gill and Frances Elizabeth Stewart Gill; her brother and 6 sisters; her son, Richard Kenneth Young; her grandson, James Edward Young; and her ex-husband, Richard Carl Young. She is survived by her three children, James "Jim" P. Young, Gary F. Young and Janyce Anderson (Dalton); her grandchildren, Elizabeth Crowley, Joe Heflin, Russell Heflin, Richard Young and Susie Young; her great-grandchildren, Jamie Alexander, Raymond Crowley, Hazel Heflin, Lily Heflin, James R. Heflin III, and Ethan Young; and one great-great-granddaughter, Sadie Hough; and one great-great-great-grandson, Kodin.
There will be three events held to celebrate Mrs.Young’s life:
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 15th from noon till 2 pm, at Riemann Family Funeral Home - located at 11280 Three Rivers Rd, Gulfport, MS.
Funeral Service will be held on Monday, May 15th at 2 pm, in the funeral home chapel.
Graveside Service will be held on Monday, May 15th from 3 pm, at Coalville Cemetery located at 12584 Lorraine Rd, Biloxi, MS.
