Evan Hendricks, Jr.

March 9, 1924 — November 3, 2018

Long time Charleston, SC native, Evan Bryant "EB" Hendricks,  Jr., passed away on November 3, 2018.  He was born on March 9, 1924, in St. Augustine, FL, son of Evan Bryant and Grace Adele (Appleby) Hendricks.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Hendricks and his parents.  He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Marilyn Cannon Hendricks; his brothers, Alfred (Buddy) Hendrick, George Hendricks, and Reverend Kirk Hendricks; children, Bryant Hendricks, III (Cheryl) and Renee Sim (Tai); grandchildren, Christopher, Tyler and Elliot Sim, Deborah (Jarred) Fore, Scott (Heather) Lampkin, and great grandchildren Aislyn, Benton, Waylon and RiAnne.
He began his working career as a young boy delivering newspapers on his bicycle.  After graduating from Conway High School, he served during WWII in the US Navy as Radioman, Second Class serving in the Euro-Africa Middle East, Philippines and Asia Pacific theatres and awarded numerous medals for his service.  After the war, he graduated from both the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Center School in Los Angeles, before working numerous high profile commercial projects around the country as a commercial advertising artist and illustrator, followed by working 23 years as an engineering draftsman and illustrator for the Charleston Country School District.
His real passion was art.  Among painting many local executive portraits, he was commissioned to paint the portrait of then Charleston, SC Mayor J. Palmer Gaillard, which hangs in City Hall.  He was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge 242, including singing in the Glee Club.  He was also a long time member of the James Island American Legion Post 0147 and the VFW Post 445.   He enjoyed sketching, painting, fishing, downhill skiing, dancing and spending lots of time with family.  He cherished his weekly Sunday morning breakfasts with his brothers and extended family at the James Island American Legion.
Funeral services will be held December 3, 2018 at Live Oak Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 3093 Ashley River Rd, Charleston SC at 11:00 AM.  The family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers.
