Captain Eugene P. Lund, U.S. Navy, Ret., age 78, of Biloxi, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2012, in Biloxi.
Mr. Lund was a graduate of The University of Notre Dame and the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School with degrees in Engineering, and from The George Washington University with a Masters Degree in Management. He entered the U.S. Navy and retired as a Captain after 25 years of distinguished service. While in the Navy, he was a Carrier Fighter Pilot, Commanding Officer, Fighter Squadron and flew 250 missions in Vietnam. He received the Bronze Star, Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, 19 additional Air medals and numerous other awards. Captain Lund headed the Navy team that designed and developed the F/A-18 aircraft. Before retirement, he served as the Director of the Naval Weapons Engineering Support Activity providing engineering assistance and consultation on many Naval Aviation and weapons programs.
He was preceded in death by parents, William and Mary Lund, his siblings, William Lund, Jim Lund, Audrey Snyder, and Mary Landry.
Survivors include his wife, Virgie Palazzo Lund, his children, Mike (Kristy) Lund, and Frank Lund, grandchildren, Chelsea, Sammy Gene, and Alex Lund, his sister, Irma White, and numerous other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 19, 2012, from 10:30 - 11:30 am at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 am in the church.
Interment, with Full Military Honors, will be in Biloxi National Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to the Retired Priests Homes c/o Our Lady of Fatima Church.
