Emilie Catherine Ladner went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 4, 2010. Though cardiac arrest stopped her heart from beating, the appreciation for the abundant love and kindness she so graciously shared with countless others will never cease. She is survived by her loving husband of almost 55 years, Leland L. Ladner, Sr. and five children, Valerie Malley (George), Sabine Ladner, Leland Ladner, Jr. (Tami), Patrice Torricelli (Damon) and Lovell Ladner (former wife, Jane). Mrs. Ladner is also survived by ten grandchildren, Pamela Malley Jacobson (David), Melissa Malley Williams (Sammy), Jonathan Ladner, Jarrod Malley, Nicolas Ladner, Ashlyn Torricelli, Zachary Torricelli, Kristina Ladner, Lovell aÌâÅL.J.aÌâ Ladner, Jr. and Skylar Ladner; and eight great-grandchildren, Jasmine Jacobson, Chelsea Williams, Amber Jacobson, Kirsten Ladner, Lindsey Jacobson, David Jacobson, Jr., Mallory Williams and Luke Williams.
Born November 25, 1938 in New Orleans, LA, Mrs. Ladner grew up an only child in the St. Williams Community of Pass Christian, MS, where she attended Delisle Elementary and Pass Christian High School. Her close-knit family included aunts and uncles who were more like siblings and many beloved cousins.
Mrs. LadneraÌââ¢s first love was her one and only, Leland Ladner. They met long before they married. A friend of LelandaÌââ¢s sister since first grade, beautiful Emilie caught the young manaÌââ¢s eye as they grew older. He asked her out on a date, launching a courtship destined for marriage. They wed in Delisle, MS on March 11, 1955 and would have celebrated 55 blessed years together next month.
An active member at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Gulfport, MS, since 1964, Mrs. Ladner served on the Bereavement Committee and the Altar Society and as a Eucharistic Minister. Her faith in God helped her weather lifeaÌââ¢s storms as she searched for His will and plan for her life.
Always busy and eager to accept a challenge, Mrs. Ladner worked hard, served others and fully enjoyed life. From her membership in the Open Gulf Watch and bowling leagues, to making ceramics and gardening, she used her talents for pleasure and for enriching the lives of others. She crocheted exquisite afghans for friends and family, designing individual patterns for each grandchild. While she was an incredible cook and easily fed large crowds, getting a recipe from her proved impossible. She never measured anything and knew the ingredients by heart.
A master at multiple trades, Mrs. Ladner maintained their rental properties nearly singlehandedly, fixing screens, scaling scaffolding and ladders and painting houses. She learned to drive her husbandaÌââ¢s eighteen-wheeler, and they paired up to take team loads cross-country. Mrs. Ladner loved to cut grass and when they got a riding mower, she claimed it as her throne.
Few tasks were too big for her, and she warmed the hearts of all who knew her and selflessly tuned into the needs of everyone she encountered. She tended the sick and bereaved in hospitals and in their homes, giving freely of her time and energy. She earned the moniker of aÌâÅDoctor MomaÌâ with her tender care and wise counsel. Even when walking became a painful chore in her last days, she visited her aunt in a nursing home to make certain she received proper care and attention.
More than anything, Mrs. Ladner enjoyed time at home with her children and grandchildren. Her greatest happiness was rooted in those early years taking care of her babies and watching them grow. She reveled in their accomplishments and cherished each moment with them and their families. Had it been an option, she would have never let them leave her side. Always the rock of stability and reassurance, she gave her family and friends the kind of love and care that only a beautiful motheraÌââ¢s heart can provide.
Mrs. Ladner is preceded in death by her mother, Clara L. McLeod, and her step-father, Hooker C. McLeod.
