Elmer R. Watts, age 84, of Gulfport, MS passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008 at home after a lengthy illness of COPD.
Mr. Watts was born June 18, 1924 in Bothwell, MS and moved to the Gulf Coast in 1936. He attended Gulfport High School, worked at Auto Electric, joined the Navy in 1943, and served 2A̽ years with the Pacific Aircraft Unit in World War II. He was employed for 40 years with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Gulfport before he retired in 1978. He was owner of Watts Western Store & Stables and a Ferrier. Mr. Watts was a member of Gulfport Masonic Lodge #442, the 21 Riders Riding club, an active leader in the Southern Riders 4-H club, and a member of the Mississippi Coast Trail Riders for over 14 years.
Elmer loved to hunt, fish, ride horses, cabinet building, and wood working.
He was preceded in death by his father, Zim R. Watts, of Columbia, TN and his mother, Clara Roney Watts, of Gulfport, MS; and two brothers, Bascom Watts of Semmis, AL and Edward Watts of Long Beach, MS.
Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Vera Burkett Watts of Gulfport, a daughter, Betty Jo Byrd and her husband, Edward, of Gulfport; two grandsons, Robert E. Byrd and his wife, Janie, of Phoenix, AZ and Stephen L. Byrd and his wife, Tracy, and their children Rebecca, Stephen II, Hailey and Brandon, all of Gulfport, MS.
A visitation will be held on Monday, August 18, 2008 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Rd, Gulfport. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at 10:00 AM at the funeral home chapel. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow at Coalville Cemetery, Woolmarket.
