Elizabeth Brown Holcomb slipped peacefully into eternity on Christmas morning in Long Beach, MS, winning her courageous battle with cancer. Born in Columbus, MS, she was the daughter of the late Rufus Garvin Burns and Jessie Goodman Burns. She was a volunteer at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport for ten years.
Elizabeth married Billy Brown, Sr., in 1951 and settled in Long Beach, raising three sons. They spent many happy years traveling together and enjoying the simple pleasures of life until his death in 1983.
In 1994, Elizabeth married Fred Holcomb of Long Beach and they were able to enjoy their senior years together until his death in 2005.
She is survived by her loving sons and their families, Joseph C. Brown of Long Beach, Billy R. Brown, Jr., wife Denise of Pass Christian, and Michael R. Brown, wife Pat of Long Beach. She also leaves to cherish her memories her beloved grandchildren, Jennifer Brown of Gulfport, Joe C., Elizabeth, and David Brown of Wiggins, Jennifer Johnson and Jessica Brown of Long Beach. Her beloved brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Juanita, and their family of Columbus. Extended family members, Brenda Fuselier, husband John of Lafayette, La., Fred Holcomb, Jr. and wife Shelby of Ocean Springs, Gail Bourdin of Long Beach, Kenneth Holcomb of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and their families.
Though orphaned at an early age, Elizabeth persevered through life always cheerful. One of her greatest joys of life was introducing her brother, Bob, of Columbus, to her sister-in-law, Juanita, after World War II. She leaves her children, extended family, and friends a legacy of hope, selflessness, modesty, and love. She was a quiet peacemaker, the epitome of a lady, graceful, always putting the welfare of her sons and their families before her own needs. Her life was one of care and concern for family. She loved deeply, without judgement, never speaking or thinking harshly of others. She was a blessing to her family.
The family would like to thank friends and family members for their prayers, gifts of food, and the many cards of encouragement. Mrs. Edna Toms and Ms. Shannon Bankston for their kindness and special care, the doctors and nurses of Memorial Hospital and Hospice.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, December 28, 2009, at 2:00pm at the Riemann Family Funeral Home, 19130 Commission Road in Long Beach, where friends may visit two hours prior to the service. Burial will follow at Long Beach City Cemetery.
