Faithful husband, loving father and grandfather and loyal friend and relative to many, Elbert Chester Vix, slipped away peacefully to continue his journey in God's loving arms on Thursday, March 15th at 8:15 am after a yearlong battle with multiple medical issues. He entered this world on October 30th, 1926 born to two of the greatest parents he could imagine, Allen Carl and Augusta Cecilia Vix.
Elbert graduated from Fortier High School and joined the Merchant Marines based in Pass Christian, MS. It was at this time that he met the love of his life, Georgine(Genie) Henrietta Farragut. They married in 1946 and he immediately embraced her family and loved them like his own.
After their marriage, they returned to New Orleans where he began a career at Woodward & Wight, Inc. and worked 35 years. He held many positions and loved being an outside Industrial Salesman for this company. When Woodward & Wight closed, he was called by Doussan & Sons, Inc where he worked full time and then in retirement worked part time until 2009.
Hurricane Katrina wiped most of his material possessions but he remained a happy and positive person. Never asking ""why me?"" but always thankful that he had his ""good ole girl"" and he would always say - ""just put a smile on your face and a song in your heart"" and we'll be OK.
He had two daughters, Betty Gene Vix Weinberger and Jo Ann Lozes, which he loved and supported in every way possible through every phase of their lives.
He felt blessed to have grandchildren, Elbert Jonathan, Allen Joel & Jordan Farragut Weinberger & Luke Jonathan Lozes to love and play with - and play he did. He was always ready for a fun adventure with the grandchildren, trips to Ship Island, canoe trips on Wolf River, trips to Alabama, fishing and crabbing in Bay St. Louis - not to mention watching countless ballgames in which they played.
He loved his extended family and friends. If you needed something, he was always there to lend a hand and support you in your time of need. Equally important, he loved to have fun. If there was a party or outing, you could always count on Elbert being in the group and probably the last to leave as he felt an obligation to help clean-up after the party. A true Southern Gentleman with a sense of honor and obligation.
When it came to telling jokes, he was a master. Rarely could you tell him a joke that he didn't know. If he didn't know the joke, he knew three others that he would tell you in the same genre. Laughing and making others laugh was a great part of his personality
Elbert lived his life to its fullest and tried to grab all the gusto that was available to him. He did this through his numerous travels around the world, his devotion to his wife, daughters, grandchildren, relatives and friends. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.
