Edith Christine Hammons Cox, native and life-long resident of the Gulf Coast went to be with The Lord on June 29, 2009. Mrs. Cox was born in Gulfport , January 29, 1911 . She was Justice Court Judge in Gulfport , Harrison County , from 1972 until 1976.
She was the first elected female Judge in the state of Mississippi .
Mrs. Cox loved to cook and was the manager of Central Junior High, East Junior High, and Gulfport High School cafeterias from 1952 until 1971.
Mrs. Cox was a member of Grace Memorial Baptist Church , where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class. She loved to sing and was a member of Grace Memorial Inspiration, and Singspiration at the First Baptist Church . Mrs. Cox was past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Coast Chapter #51 and enjoyed being an installing officer statewide for many years. She was also a charter member of the White Shrine, Peace Shrine #1, Editor of the Supreme Herald and a lifetime member of the Material Objective, White Shrine. Mrs. Cox was a charter and lifetime member of the Order of the Amaranth, #2 of Gulfport . She belonged to the Gulfport Little Theater, Gulfport Business and Professional WomenaÌââ¢s Club, and was a lifetime member of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Alumni Association. Mrs. Cox was a member of the Gulf Coast Shrine Club Ladies Auxiliary and served as president in 1972 and 1976.
Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her parents, Martin N. Hammons and Mary Trehern Hammons, beloved husband Judge Marion Palmer Cox, sisters Ethel Hammons Dubisson, and Gladys Hammons Johnson, and daughter-in-law Joann Cox.
Survivors include sons Arnold B. Cox (Barbara), Arlington, TX, and Farley Eugene Cox, Gulfport; Grandchildren Allison Lenz (Alan) Charlotte, North Carolina; Allan Cox (Angela) McKinney, TX, Cameron Cox, and Arielle Cox both of Gulfport; Great-grandchildren Wray Alan Lenz, and Robert Michael Lenz of Charlotte, North Carolina: step-son Marion P. Cox, Jr. Los Angeles, CA; sister Sadie Starrett of Gulfport, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 pm, Thursday, July 2 at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Rd, Gulfport. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel at 3 pm Friday, July 3 . Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery .
