Douglas Wayne Montana, aged 88, died in hospital on February 15, 2022.
Wayne was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He served honorably in the Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Captain. He earned the Navy Achievement Medal with Valor for meritorious service and the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for Heroism during his service.
Wayne was a gifted storyteller and enjoyed speaking on adventures with his cousins Roy and Troy Smith growing up in Barth, Mississippi. He could reminisce for hours at a time, keeping his audience captivated. He loved eating his cherry pies every morning with his coffee and snacking on peanut butter and crackers. He would roll his cigarettes every day before enjoying reading a book or playing on the computer.
Wayne is predeceased by his father, Thomas Ervin Montana; mother, Jessie Dena Smith Montana McQueen; brothers, Tommie, Bernie, Gordon and Mickey; sister, Mila Montana; son, Barry Craig Montana; his ex-wife, Audrey Shaw Montana and wife, Evelyn Greenlee Montana. Wayne is survived by his son, Kenneth Montana and daughter, Toy McIntire Cadien, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM on Thursday, February 24, 2022 at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, with a funeral service beginning at 2:30 PM in the funeral home chapel. Interment with military honors will follow at Smith Cemetery, previously named Steep Hollow Cemetery.
