Dorothy Spalding, age 88, passed away April 9, 2018 in Biloxi, MS. She was born in Joplin, MO, growing up in Galena, KS, until age 16.
She was preceded in death by her parents Oscar J. and Bessie Marie Gray; her brother, Jay Dale and wife Agnes Gray of CA.
She is survived by her daughter, Deborah (Jerry) Carman. "NONA" is what she was lovingly called by her granddaughter, Carra (Rick) Sawyer; grandson, Jay (Abby) Carman; and great grandchildren, Turner, Trent, Jackson, Grace Marie and Tessa Marie, all of the Little Rock, AR area. She has two nieces Lisbeth and Brenda Gray of CA.
Beauvoir United Methodist Church was her church home. She was an active P.E.O. member for 38 years of which she was most proud. As a National Red Cross Disaster worker for 10 years she was deployed for months on hurricane, flood, fire, and earthquake disaster relief leaving her home in Biloxi unselfishly to help others across the U.S. She was on the MS Gulf Coast Red Cross Chapter Board of Directors, received an award from the City of Biloxi for Outstanding Volunteer and helped with the Miss Universe Pageants. She was a Life Master Bridge player seldom losing a game. Dorothy loved her family and "Nona" presided as Matriarch at family gatherings. We were blessed she was with us at our unique "beach" Christmas 2017 on the Gulf Coast.
Deep gratitude from the family for many months of unselfish intense caregiving by her devoted friend, Dee. Also to Joanne who stepped in as needed without question. Many neighbors and loyal friends were there for Dorothy to help knowing her only family lived many miles away which brought them comfort. We are grateful to Nurse Monique and Aide Sharon from Saad who helped those last difficult days with kindness and dignity.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 21, 2018 from 3:30pm-4:15pm with a memorial service at 4:15 pm at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 274 Beauvoir Rd. Biloxi, MS, 39531. In lieu of flowers family requests donations to the charity of your choice.
