Dorothy Jean Payne

d. December 24, 2008

Dorothy Jean Payne, 80 of Gulfport, went home peacefully on Wednesday, December 24. She was born in her parentaÌ‚â‚â„¢s home in Magee, Mississippi on the 17th. day of December, 1928.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Major George H. Payne, Sr., her parents, Joseph William Ellzey and Helen L. Goodwin, and her younger sister, Katherine Winegarten.
She is survived by her sister, Georgia Pauline Huggins (Hubert) of Natchitoches, Louisiana. Her daughter, Cindy Childers (Larry), and five sons, George H. Payne, Jr., (Debi), Bob Payne (Toni), Tom Payne (Diane), Greg Payne (Penny) and one step-son, Steve Barber (Janice) of Chula Vista, California, as well as 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Dorothy began her life in Magee Mississippi, where she lived for several years before moving to Gulfport, Mississippi in the 1940aÌ‚â‚â„¢s with her mother. She met George Payne on a blind date arranged by his sister, Bessie, and in 1949 he became her husband.
As George Payne was an officer in the Air Force, Dorothy had several places to call home. Her children were born in military hospitals all over the world. In addition to being an officeraÌ‚â‚â„¢s wife and a mother to five children, she found time to volunteer as a Grey Lady at military hospitals located on the Bases they were stationed.
After Major PayneaÌ‚â‚â„¢s retirement at Keesler Air Force Base, the PayneaÌ‚â‚â„¢s made their home in Gulfport, Mississippi. While in Gulfport, Dorothy was a member of Grace Memorial Baptist Church. She was not only a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was very community oriented, as she was a member of several organizations along the coast. Among them are the Gulfport Garden Club, and she was a lifetime member of the Gulfport WomenaÌ‚â‚â„¢s Club. She also volunteered many hours at the Harrison County ChildrenaÌ‚â‚â„¢s Shelter in Gulfport. In the 1960aÌ‚â‚â„¢s Dorothy worked outside the home as a manager of Olan MillaÌ‚â‚â„¢s Photography and in the early 1970aÌ‚â‚â„¢s she managed a small clothing boutique in Gulfport.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Bob Payne, Jr., Windy Swetman, III, Jeff Payne, Brandon Payne, Trey Payne, and Jase Payne.
Because of her humble spirit and kindhearted nature, Dorothy will be greatly missed by family and friends. We celebrate with her, because she received her Christmas Eve gift and went Home for Christmas.
DorothyaÌ‚â‚â„¢s children agree that their mother would prefer donations to the Harrison County ChildrenaÌ‚â‚â„¢s Shelter or the Second Cup Ministry at Grace Memorial Baptist Church.
Visitation will be Saturday, December 27, 2008, at Grace Memorial Baptist Church, Gulfport, where friends may call from 11:00-1:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
