Obituary of Doris J. Copeland

It is with great sadness that we announce that Doris Jones Copeland, 83, of Diamondhead, MS passed away on August 17, 2024 at home. She was born on May 30, 1941 in Columbia, Louisiana to Army Lt. Col. Rosamond Jones and Debbie Zeagler. The family moved around the U.S. to different Army bases, including two years at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. After returning to the U.S., she graduated from Minden High School in north Louisiana, and then from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, getting a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics. She worked as a dietician and a real estate agent, among other jobs. After getting a position with the State of Louisiana, Doris rose in the ranks to become head of the Office of Risk Management in the Department of Revenue. She retired in 2004 after an almost 30-year career there.

Doris spent her career years living in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Butte La Rose, Louisiana. The last 10 years she moved to Corsicana, Texas, where she lived in her custom-built house on Lake Richland Chambers. Each year she would pick a place to vacation in Europe. She also spoiled her grandchildren by taking each one of them on a European trip of their choice once they graduated high school. Doris moved to Diamondhead in November 2023 after the death of her husband of 38 years, Bill Copeland.

She is survived by a sister, Rosie Jones Peaker of Florence, Alabama, and her children, Robin Brasher Dotson of Arlington, Texas, Richard Hayden Brasher of Tampa, Florida, and Raymond Dijon Ryle of Kiln, Mississippi. She also has 5 grandchildren – Sara Ryle Gigliotti, Heather Ryle, Sebastian Ryle, Sydney Dotson, and Hayden Brasher. Great-grandchildren are Dahlia Duhon, Everleigh Gigliotti, and Tristan Gigliotti. She will be greatly missed by all of her family.

A memorial service is being planned for November 2024.
