Donald James ""Jim"" Findlay, age 82, of Long Beach, peacefully passed away at home with his son by his side on Monday, February 21, 2011.
Born on March 2, 1928 in Detroit MI, Mr. Findlay was a native of Allen Park MI, and was a resident of the Mississippi Coast since 1976. He served in the US Army during WWII, participating in the Occupation of Japan, and for his service received the Occupation of Japan and WWII Victory Medals. He graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology, and the University of Maryland with a degree in Accounting. He worked for the Detroit Free Press, and later the US Naval Oceanograhic Office, retiring in 2001 after 42 years of Federal service. Mr. Findlay enjoyed sailing, reading, gardening, hunting, and spending time with his wife and family. He was a Life Member of VFW Post 3937, member of Sons of Confederate Veterans, Sam Davis Camp 596 at Beauvoir Jefferson Davis's Shrine, Life Member of the National Rifle Association, a founding member of the (Mardi Gras) Krewe of DocMarVa, a member of the Scottish Clan Farquharson, and a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, in Long Beach.
He was preceded by his wife, Helen Patricia ""Pat"" Findlay; two sons, Donald Bruce Findlay and Robert James Findlay; his parents, Ronald and Marguerite Findlay; and a brother, Ronald Robert Findlay.
Survivors include his sons, Douglas Cameron Findlay of San Diego CA, and Christopher William Findlay, Long Beach MS; his siblings Richard William Findlay of Ocean Springs MS, Iris Young of Ann Arbor MI, and Walter Robin Findlay of Sarasota FL; his four grandchildren, James Douglas Findlay of Richmond VA, Cameron Findlay of Oakton VA, Sander Findlay of Falls Church VA, and Heather Lee Findlay of Annapolis MD; and his great-grandchild, Alyssa Marie Findlay of Richmond VA.
A visitation from 11 am - 12 noon will be held Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 720 East Beach Blvd., Long Beach MS. A Catholic Mass of Chistian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon at the church. Interment will be in St. Paul Cemetery.
