David Winsberg

~~David Jacob Winsberg was born in New Orleans on February 14, 1936.  He died on October 27, 2017 at his home in Gulfport, Mississippi.  He was the son of Winfred and Sadye Rae Winsberg.  David is survived by his brother, Judge Jerome Winsberg and his wife Isabel, as well as by his nephews, Marc Winsberg and his wife Lori, Michael Winsberg and his wife Connie, and all six of their children.
David graduated from Alcee Fortier high school and attended college at LSU and Southeastern Universities.  After college David joined the Army and honorably served his country.  David lived most of his adult life in Miami and the Florida Keys.   He was a licensed captain and operated a tour and scuba diving boat in Tavernier Key.  David was extremely smart and very interesting.  He was his own man and lived his life as he saw fit.  If you ever met David, you would not forget him. David was a beatnik before there were hippies.
David could fix anything mechanical.  In his teens, he even built a racecar from scratch.  He raced that car and others on dirt tracks around New Orleans.  David loved boats and the sea.   He was an avid windsurfer and travelled the world to find the right wind.  He captained cargo ships to and from South America.  He was also a licensed airplane pilot and loved flying.
Later in life David moved to Waveland, where he, in his typical fashion, refused to evacuate when Katrina roared up the Gulf.  He rode out the storm.  David quickly bounced back and moved to Gulfport to live out the remainder of his life.  He had many wonderful friends, to whom he was loyal and they to him.  He will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by his friends and family.  Pursuant to David's wishes, his remains will be placed in the Gulfstream off the coast of the Florida Keys.
