David P. Samiagio, age 69, of Gulfport passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Ochsner Medical Center-Hancock. He is preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Wilma Samiagio; and brother, James Samiagio. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Bonnie Hanson; his daughter, Shannon Scott (Jonathan); grandchildren, Lucas and Liam Scott; brothers, Peter Samiagio and William Samiagio; and several nieces and nephews.
David was a native of Westerly, Rhode Island. He was a graduate of Chariho High School and obtained his associate degree in business management from American Intercontinental University. After graduation, he began his career in the ship industry in design, but quickly moved into management. He worked at shipyards in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Virginia, and finally retired from Avondale in Louisiana and Ingalls in Mississippi from his position as manager of purchasing compliance and cost analysis. David had a true passion for his line of work and took great pride in the ships he took part in creating. He was also a gifted home designer and crafted many homes in Rhode Island. He was an avid boy scout and earned their highest rank of Eagle Scout after which he served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America.
He loved to watch the Saints and going to Island View Casino. He was often heard boasting to others about his daughter and enjoyed spending time with his grandsons. David was also an avid lover of the beach.
He was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and loved his church family dearly. David was also a member of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Due to his progressive illness, David met a multitude of healthcare workers throughout his life. The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, aides, physical, occupational and speech therapists who have cared for David. A very special thanks to the Mississippi Gulf Coast MS Society, Woodland Village, Deaconess Hospice of Biloxi (Stacie, Beverly, Nikki, Jackie, Asia, Josh) for their compassionate care and to all the staff at Ochsner Medical Center-Hancock who were there in his final moments. Thanks to one of his “second daughters” Jincy Ferrill for her tireless love and support.
In Lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Mississippi Gulf Coast Multiple Sclerosis Society or St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.
Heaven got a little brighter and our world got a little darker as, after an 18-year battle with primary progressive multiple sclerosis and surrounded by loved ones, our beloved David P. Samiagio peacefully passed from the physical world and gained his angel wings on April 3, 2024. We are comforted to know he is no longer suffering and is walking the streets of gold on legs that can now carry him. Free at last.
