David Charles Oeschger, born on November 4, 1932, in Albion, Michigan, passed away peacefully on October 22 2024, in Gulfport, Mississippi at the Claiborne. He lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a love for education and family.
David's career was distinguished by his 24 years in the United States Coast Guard, he served as an electrician. His military service took him to various locations including New York, The Netherlands, Japan, Kuri Island, and Con Son Island in Vietnam, as well as across both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico. Following his honorable service, David transitioned into education, spending 20 years as a junior high and high school Math and Industrial Arts teacher for the Harrison County Schools of Mississippi. His time in the classroom was characterized by a passion for teaching and a commitment to shaping the minds of future generations.
David's educational background included studying at the RCA Institute of Technology in New York City, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree, and later obtaining a Masters in Education from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Beyond his professional achievements, David was known for his hobbies and interests, which included woodworking and a deep commitment to his Baptist faith. He was also a valued member of the Masonic community, showcasing his dedication to fellowship and support.
David is survived by his three children: Gretchen Cozby (David) of Benton, IL, Mary Lynn Oeschger of Biloxi, MS, and David Oeschger, Jr. of Las Vegas, NV. He treasured his grandchildren, Mary Kemp (Troy) of San Francisco, CA, and Gretchen Bennett of Benton, IL, and was especially proud of his great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Joshua Bennett of Benton, IL. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Marie Fullwood of Southport, NC, his brother-in-law, Harvey Hill of Englewood, FL, his niece, Jackie Mercado (Sal) of Hermosa, SD, and his nephew, Billy Wedge.
David was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary Oeschger, as well as his parents, John and Margaret Oeschger, and his siblings: brother Robert Oeschger, sister Nancy Hill, and brothers-in-law Marvin Fullwood, Len (Edie) Fullwood, LeRoy Fullwood (Anne), Jo Jo Fullwood, and Lewis Herbert Fullwood (Anne).
A graveside service to honor David's life and legacy will be held at Biloxi National Cemetery with Military Honors, located at 400 Veterans Ave, Biloxi, MS 39531, on October 29, 2024, beginning at 12:30 PM. His family invites friends and loved ones to join them in celebrating the remarkable life of this devoted husband, father, educator, and veteran. David Charles Oeschger will be remembered as a man of great integrity, warmth, and unwavering love for those he cherished.
The Family thanks the Memory Care Unit of the Claiborne Assisted Living Facility and the St. Joseph's Hospice Care of Gulfport for their exceptional care that was loving, kind and professional.
