David Clayton Hunnings was born in Pascagoula, MS, on November 27, 1971. A lifelong resident of Helena, he was a graduate of Moss Point High School and the Mississippi Fire Academy in Pearl, MS. David came from a family of North Carolina and Mississippi fishermen, and was employed for nearly 20 years as a second engineer and onshore mechanic with Omega Protein. He began volunteering with the Escatawpa Fire Department at the age of 18, which led to more than 15 years of service with the Moss Point Fire Department where he served as a lieutenant.
David was a Christian with tremendous faith in the Lord and was grateful to have been given the opportunity to share his faith during his lifetime, but especially while battling kidney cancer. He was a man who was much loved by his family and his many friends. An avid outdoorsman, he greatly enjoyed spending time deer hunting, duck hunting, fishing and camping. David went home to be with our Lord on Friday, May 15, 2009, in Mobile, AL, at the age of 37.
David is survived by his loving wife, Denise Parker Hunnings; his beloved son, Tyler Sidney Parker Hunnings; his parents, Clayton and Ava Hunnings of Pascagoula; two sisters: Pam (Joe) Cravero of Georgia and Laura Hunnings (Dwayne) Etheridge of Ocean Springs; nieces and nephews: Brittany Parker, Justin Parker, Alicia Ehlers, Stephen Ehlers II, D. J. Bacon, Casey Collins and Ryan Cravero; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers in the fire department and treasured friends. Special thanks go to the many caring individuals at Helena Ballfield, Moss Point Fire Department, Omega Protein, International House of Prayer and New Horizon Ministries for the love and support given during his illness.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday morning from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at New Horizon Ministries, 10501 Highway 63, Moss Point. Services begin at noon, officiated by Pastor Anthony Cole and Brother Don Edeker. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery on Saracennia Road in Helena where he will receive fireman's honors.
