David Hopkins

d. March 24, 2022

David Eugene Hopkins, 78, passed away on 24 March 2022 at Merit Health Wesley in Hattiesburg, MS.  He was one of four children born to Emmett and Ellen (Schreeg) Hopkins on 31 March 1943 in Rensselaer, IN.  Dave is preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Kim Hopkins of Mesa, AZ.  He is survived by his wife, Judith K. (Brandenburg) Hopkins, Martinez, GA; a daughter, Shannon K. Hopkins, Martinez, GA; a son, Travis E. Hopkins (wife Judy), Jackson, SC; three siblings, Janice Malchow, Dyer, IN, Sue Kanney (Pat) of Rensselaer, IN and Pete Hopkins (Jana) of Mesa, AZ; a granddaughter, Mandy Hopkins (Josh) Williams; a great grandson, Skylar Hopkins and a great granddaughter, Gracelyn Williams.

Dave attended high school in Rensselaer, IN and later joined the United States Army where he served both domestic and abroad. He was stationed at Ft. Benning, GA, Ft. Gordon, GA, Ft. Bragg, NC and Ft. Rucker, AL Flight School where he earned his Wings as a pilot.  He also served in Vietnam where he flew a variety of missions as a helicopter pilot. Dave received many medals to include the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and Republic of Korea Army Wings.  He retired as a Captain in the United States Army and later earned the rank as Major in the United States Army Reserves.  He loved his country and served it proudly. Dave was indeed a true Patriot.

Traveling was one of his favorite things to do.  He especially enjoyed the trips in his RV out west to his nephew Kim (now deceased) and his wife Kathy where family get togethers in the mountains were fun and exciting for everyone.  Dave was also a big NASCAR fan and attended the races when possible.

He enjoyed hanging out in the mornings at Southern Camper in Gulfport, MS with Paul, Glen, Tim, and the rest of the gang for coffee and donuts! When visiting back home he had the same camaraderie with Dave Spangler and the bunch at NAPA in Demotte, IN.

Dave will be greatly missed by his family and friends.  His family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the many medical personnel along with State Veterans Home in Collins, MS for their professional care and support in caring for Dave during his illness. It will always be remembered.
