Danny Ray Meadors passed unexpectedly Tuesday, February 21, 2022, of natural causes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Patsy Winterstein (Meadors) Bass and William Danial Meadors Jr.; his half-brother, William Daniel Meadors III, and his half-sister, Martha Jeanette Routt.
Danny is survived by his sister, Prudence Meadors; his nieces, Theresa Byers and Kelly Park; as well as cousins and his beloved St. Patrick’s family.
Before he graduated Long Beach High School in 1972, he had already begun his long association with St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, when at the age of 12 he began mowing the lawn. By 1987 he had completed a program of Education for Ministry from the School of Theology, the University of the South. In 1997 he was installed as the Verger of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church. Danny’s service and contributions to the Episcopal Church extended to the Diocesan and National Convention level; he was Chairman for Lay Ministry Education and served on numerous committees over the years.
Danny started working for the City of Gulfport in February of 1978 as a meter reader for the Utility Department. He worked his way up through Customer New Account Clerk and also helped the City Clerk’s office with elections. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Danny took on the critical process of assessing all personal property south of the railroad so the rebuilding process could begin. This resulted in him being named Property Manager for the City of Gulfport. Danny retired June 28, 2019, and the Mayor declared that day to be Danny Meadors Day. The Gulfport Police Department also recognized and appreciated Danny’s contributions to Gulfport. Retirement did not stop Danny from working for the city. He was often called to help with property auctions, elections and just general questions until they finally hired him as a part time consultant.
Danny’s family history with the railroads made him quite the railroad fan. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of Gulfport and the surrounding area. His interest in history also extended to historical recreation with the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), where ‘Danny the Verger’ was recently recognized with the honor of Citizen of the Barony of Seleone.
In spite of all these awards and honors, Danny remained a humble man. He did not care the person’s race, religion, sexual orientation or occupation; he would greet you with a sincerely warm smile and respect what you had to say. He will be missed by everyone who had the great good fortune to know him.
Funeral services for Danny will be held on Thursday, March 3, 2022 at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, Long Beach, MS at 11:00 a.m. with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Long Beach Cemetery 216 Girard Ave, Long Beach, MS. Reception will be at the church at 1:00 PM.
