Diamondhead

Dan C. Sloan, of Diamondhead, MS passed away on March 9, 2022, with his family by his side.  Dan was born on February 15, 1942, in Norwich, KS.

Dan graduated from Kingman High School in 1960.  He attended Kansas State University where he met Marilyn Morton, who became his wife and partner in life for 59 years.  After graduating from KSU with a degree in mechanical engineering, Dan moved to Camden, SC, starting a 45-year career with DuPont.  At DuPont, Dan developed a reputation as a highly regarded company leader in the global manufacturing of titanium dioxide.  After stints in New Johnsonville, TN and Wilmington, DE, Dan moved to the Delisle, MS plant where he was a leader in the design and start-up of both manufacturing lines.  Dan’s career culminated with the start-up of the Kuan Yin plant in Taiwan and a return to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where he was able to help lead the rebuilding of the Delisle plant after Katrina.  During his career Dan’s manufacturing knowledge and experience were matched by his desire to help and mentor other professionals.  Dan’s influence was felt by many successful and grateful “Duponters.”

Throughout his life, Dan pursued many hobbies, all of which revolved around a love of action and the outdoors.  He developed a life-long interest in cars, which included repair and restoration as well as racing.   At various times in his life, Dan enjoyed racing dirt bikes, playing competitive tennis, running road races, sailing, competitive road biking, and hiking cross-country.  He even qualified for the Senior Olympics with his competitive road cycling.

Dan was fascinated in researching his family lineage and learning more about his family history. While doing this research he learned that many people are in search of locating the gravesites of loved ones and began to volunteer to help identify graves on the Gulf Coast.

During his retirement years, Dan also enjoyed traveling with Marilyn to visit their three sons and grandson, always enthusiastically helping them with projects around their houses.  His grandson was truly his pride and joy. He loved getting to watch him learn how to ride his bike or drive his kart, usually a bit too fast. Recently Dan had collected silkworms and had shown him how they start as caterpillars and eventually hatch into beautiful butterflies.

Spending time outside at home and in nature was a priority for Dan, including working in the yard in Diamondhead, donating time as a Mississippi Habitat Steward on restoration projects, assisting wildlife research projects and hiking in Montana and Arizona.  His love for nature was evident, whether out to dinner or out for a hike, he could always name whatever bird was flying by and identify the various trees  and plants you came across.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Doris Sloan, as well as his brother, Jim Sloan.  He is survived by his wife; Marilyn, three sons; Darin, Brandon, and Justin; daughter-in-law Katie Sue; grandson, Jackson; and brother, Dave.

Dan was a kind, thoughtful and dedicated family man who will be dearly missed.

Our family is forever grateful for the love, caring, and support shown to us.  We thank you from the depths of our hearts and send you all love.
