Cummings H. McCall, age 87, died Sunday, November 18, 2007 in OaÌââ¢Fallon, Missouri. Cummings aÌâÅSunnyaÌâ McCall was born October 10, 1920 in Montgomery, Alabama.
Mr. McCall came to the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1927 and was a graduate of Gulfport High School and Auburn University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in 1942.
During World War II, he served as a Captain in the Army Corps of Engineers, participating in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, 1944.
In December 1945, Mr. McCall was promoted to Major in the active reserves. He received the Distinguished Unit Badge and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal.
Joining Mississippi Power Company in February, 1957, Mr. McCall worked as an engineer on construction of the first three generating units at Plant Jack Watson. In June, 1962, he was assigned to the Company's General Office Construction Department. In 1969, he became Coastal Division Manager shortly before Hurricane Camille struck August 17. Mississippi PoweraÌââ¢s Camille restoration effort received the Edison award. Mr McCall retired as the Executive Assistant to the Vice President of Corporate Services in December 1983.
A registered professional engineer, Mr. McCall was a member of the Gulfport Rotary Club, Gulfport Lions, Gulfport Chamber of Commerce and Great Southern Country Club. He was also a United Way Chairman and was active in the Boy Scouts of America.
Mr. McCall was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Heiskell Kemmer McCall, and his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Cummings H. McCall. Mr. McCall is survived by a sister, Jane Ann Schlegel, Boca Raton, FL; sons, Mac McCall and his wife Rose of Benton, AR and Charlie McCall and his wife Tricia of Hudson, OH; a daughter, Kemmer McCall of Gulfport; and five granddaughters, Salissa Wahlers of Shelburne, VT, Erin Wahlers of Niceville, FL, Carolyn McCall of St. Charles, MO, and Mary and Katie McCall of Hudson, OH.
The family would like to especially thank the staff and nurses at Delmar Gardens of O'Fallon, Missouri (assisted living facility) and Pathways Hospice.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 23, 2007, at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, where friends may call from 4-6 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday in the funeral home chapel at 10 a.m.
