Harvey L. Nixon, Jr. (1/4/1940 – 3/24/2022)

Colonel Harvey L. Nixon, Jr. (US Air Force – Retired) passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2022, at the age of 82. After battling Parkinson’s disease for many years and several months of declining health, Harvey passed peacefully with family by his side.

Harvey was born on January 4, 1940, to father, Harvey L. Nixon and mother, Vollie Nixon (Taylor). The oldest of two sons, Harvey was the first in his family to attend college graduating from West Georgia College in June 1963. After a brief experience as a high school history teacher, Harvey joined the Air Force and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on March 31, 1964. He served in the Air Force for 26 years retiring as a Colonel in 1989. Harvey served in Vietnam 1967 – 1968 and was awarded the Bronze Star.

After his retirement from the Air Force, Harvey worked as a government contractor and devoted a significant portion of his time to family, non-profits, civic organizations, and fishing. He is a past president of the Lions Club and the Mississippi Coast chapter of the Military Officers Association of America and is a past Chairman of the Biloxi Veteran’s Parade. He was also instrumental in the development and the launching of a diabetes camp for children at Camp Wilkes in Biloxi.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Vollie Nixon and a grandson, Kyle Nixon. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judy Nixon (Evans), His brother, Jack Nixon, his sons, Brigadier General (R) Craig & Debbie Nixon, Kevin & Barbara Nixon, and Lieutenant Colonel (R) Mike & Leigh Nixon, and nine grandchildren.

Friends are invited to join the Nixon family for a visitation on Thursday, March 31, 2022, from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at the West Jackson County chapel of Riemann Family Funeral Home, 13872 Lemoyne Blvd., Biloxi, MS 39532. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.  A Reception for family and friends will follow the service.

On Monday, April 4, Harvey will be laid to rest at the Biloxi National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.  The procession will depart at 2:00 p.m. from Riemann Family Funeral Home, 274 Beauvoir Road, Biloxi, MS 39531.
