Lt Col Nicholas J. Coury, U.S. Air Force, Ret, age 72, of Gulfport, passed away on April 12, 2009 at his home in Lizana, attended by his family.
He was born on April 2, 1936 in Detroit, MI. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in Physics and received his MBA from Auburn University.
He served on active duty with the U.S. Air Force for twenty years, retiring to the Gulf Coast in 1979.
He continued to work as an electrical engineer with Mason-Chamberlain and then with Applied Geo Technologies at Stennis until he lost a well-fought battle with cancer.
He was a staunch supporter and board member of the South Mississippi Gun Association and a member of Biloxi Yacht Club. He was a life member of both the National Rifle Association and the American Quarter Horse Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Doris Coury, and one brother, David Coury.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sharon Somora, of Gulfport; his son, Morgan Coury, of Gulfport; his daughter, Jamie Toomey, and her husband, Tim, of Omaha, AR; his son, Toby Coury, of Gulfport; his granddaughter, Julie Sottilo, of San Antonio, TX; his sister, Carol Schroeder, and her husband, Bob, of Fredericksburg, VA; his brothers, Richard Coury, and his wife, Marilou, of Clinton, MI, Robert Coury and his wife, Joyce, of Tecumseh, MI, and William Coury and his wife, Robin, of Ann Arbor, MI.
The family wishes to sincerely thank all those who helped with Nicholas' care during his illness, especially Dr. Clarkson and the compassionate angels of mercy at Memorial Hospital at Gulfport.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 17, 2009 at 12:30 PM at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Lizana, where family and friends may visit from 11:00 AM until the mass. Burial with full military honors will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery.
