Charles Gary Whitmore, age 76, of Gautier, passed away on July 26, 2022.
Charles was born in Pascagoula to Lionel and Minette Owens Whitmore on July 31, 1945. He excelled scholastically, earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Mississippi State University. A proponent of technology and its uses, he became an instructor of those classes on the Jackson County campus of what was then Perkinston Junior College, currently MGCCC Jackson County campus. It was there he met Sherry Ann Lawrence, the love of his life, with whom he shared 46 years of marriage.
Charles Whitmore never lost his enthusiasm for life or an opportunity to have fun. He particularly enjoyed playing golf with his group, the Bullpen! They never missed a chance to share a breakfast or a round of golf, until recently. Charles also made certain to visit his favorite courses at Disney World, a place he and Sherry enjoyed regularly. In fact, when Sherry could no longer travel with him, he sent most of his nieces and nephews there for a memorable holiday. No wonder that while he was never a father, Charles was everyone’s favorite uncle. His dry humor and quick wit are qualities his family loved most, in addition to his kind and generous heart.
An avid fisherman as well, Charles often came home with trophies and prizes, his favorite target being bass. He loved it so much that he was fishing on the Pearl River as the gale winds from Hurricane George approached.
Charles Whitmore was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Sherry L. Whitmore; his parents; brothers, Lonnie and Michael Whitmore; and nephew, Timothy Goynes.
He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Kimsey (Glen) Cavalier, Troy Whitmore, Kim Richardson, Kevin (Carla) Lawrence, Kathy (Keith) Green, Kyle (Christy) Lawrence, Kelly (Mike) Gill, Leslie Goynes, Joseph (Alicia) Lawrence, and Millicent (Nick) Holliman; sister-in-law, Linda Whitmore; brothers-in-law, Richard (Mena) Lawrence and John W. (Vicki) Lawrence; and sister-in-law, Donnie Goynes; plus numerous great-nephews and nieces.
