Charles Lamar Walker

July 1, 1927 — April 30, 2012

Mr. Charles L. Walker passed away on the 30th of April, 2012 in Gulfport, MS at the age of 84.
He was born the 20th of July, 1927 to parents, Thomas Joseph Walker, Sr. and Margaret Christine Colston Walker of Gulfport, MS. Charles was a graduate of St. John High School; attended Perkinston Junior College and the University of Southern Mississippi, studying accounting and sociology. He studied law through extension courses from LaSalle University.
Charles worked for United Gas Corporation for 21 years, prior to being elected Finance Commissioner for the City of Gulfport in 1969. He served four terms as Finance Commissioner when the City of Gulfport was under the mayor-commissioner form of government and also spent 14 years as mayor pro tempore. He was names ""Boss of the Year"" and was very passionate about the City of Gulfport. The City honored him by naming the senior center in West Gulfport on 8th Street, the Charles L. Walker Senior Center. After four terms as Finance Commissioner, he worked for a local bank for 12 years.
He was an ordained Deacon and a lifetime parishioner of St. John Catholic Church, member of the Knights of Columbus; member of the Krewe of Gemini, serving as King; member of the Greater Gulfport Jaycees; Past President of the Gulfport Business Men's Club; and chairman of the American Cancer Society. He enjoyed and spending time coaching little league baseball with the Jaycees and coaching baseball, basketball, and football at St. John High School.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Joseph Walker, Sr. and Margaret Christine Colston Walker; his brother, Thomas Joseph Walker, Jr. and Louis B. Walker; and his sisters, Lillian Ruth Bolling, Genevieve Benevidias, and Margaret C. Hart.
He is survived by his sisters, Alda M. Walker of Gulfport and Mary W. Paull of Gulfport; nieces, Paulette C. Paull of Gulfport, Carol Campbell of Gulfport, Sylvia McNeill of Gulfport, Beth Davis of Long Beach; and nephew, Thomas J. Hart of Gulfport.
Friends are invited to a visitation from 11:00 am until 12:00 noon, the 5th of May, 2012 at St. John Catholic Church in Gulfport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 noon immediately following the visitation at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Interment will immediately follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Gulfport.
