Charles """"Charlie"""" C. Thurman, age 57 and a resident of Saucier, died on Sunday, July 26, 2009, in Saucier.
Charlie was a native and lifelong resident of the MS Gulf Coast. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church, a 1971 graduate of Gulfport High School, and served for 23 years in the MS Army National Guard, 890th Engineer Battalion.
Charlie retired in 1993 as a Patrol Captain with the Gulfport Police Department, after 20 years of service. He was currently employed with the Gulfport Police Department as a Vehicle Maintenance Foreman. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, and was known as a """"garage-pool shark"""".
He is preceded in death by his parents, James W. & Caroline Lizana Thurman; his brother, James K. Thurman and two sisters, Donna Hanks and Mary Rogers.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Rhonda Shaw Thurman; his son, Damian (Bridget) Brockhoeft of Perkinston; his daughter, Jessica (Stephen) Akers of Saucier; his sisters, Betty (George) Sears of Gulfport, Eva (Bill) Ashburn of Poplarville, Patricia (Stanley) Allen of Pass Christian, and Avis (Mike) Garland of Gulfport; his brothers, Wallace (Ruth) Thurman and William (Linda) Thurman all of McHenry, Wiley Thurman of Saucier, Edmond (Sheila) Thurman of Lizana and Martin (Diane) Goodman of Long Beach; five grandchildren, Trey and Tara Hancock, Jaden and Noah Akers, and Nacol Brockhoeft; numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends who loved him dearly.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. at the Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road in Gulfport, where friends may visit two hours prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Gulfport Police Athletic League, 2220 15th Street, Gulfport, MS 39501.
