CE1 Charles M. Smith, Jr., U.S. Navy, Ret., 74, of Long Beach died Sunday, October 15, 2006 in Gulfport.
He was a native of Little Rock, AR and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War in both the fleet service and the SeaBees. He received a Purple Heart and retired from military service in 1986. Mr. Smith was a member of VFW Post 9531, DeLisle, member of New Hope Baptist Church, North Long Beach Volunteer Fire Department and a volunteer fireman at the DeLisle Fire Station, Senior Volunteer at the Harrison County Courthouse and a past volunteer at the International Seaman's Center in Gulfport. He also served as a poll worker for the Harrison County Election Commission, an active member for 22 years of the Boy Scouts of America, and a KOPS member of TOPS 214 in Biloxi.
Mr. Smith enjoyed spending time operating HAM Radios, volunteering, and spending time with his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles M. Smith, Sr. and Lessie Marie Smith.
Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Lillie Darlene Smith, Long Beach; 3 sons: Charles M. (Debra) Smith, III, DeLisle, Clifford Smith, Red Lion, PA and David Smith, Phoenix, AZ; 1 daughter, Joyce (Frank) Liccardo, Naples, Italy; 3 brothers: George (Maxine) Smith, Lake Charles, LA, David Smith, Mesa, AZ, and Steve (Terrie) Smith, St. Louis, MO; 3 sisters: Mary Jo (Richard) Roy, Little Rock, AR, Marie (B.W.) Payne, Granbury, TX, and Martha (Gary) Alexander, Porter, TX; grandchildren: Sam, Elena, Rosa, and Simone Liccardo of Naples, Itlay, Cory, Dana, and Aron Smith of Red Lion, PA, and Chase, Anissa, and Courtney Smith of DeLisle; and 2 great-grandsons: Nicholas and Francesco Liccardo of Naples, Italy, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10 am - 12 noon Thursday, October 19, 2006 at New Hope Baptist Church, Landon Road, Gulfport. The funeral service will be at 12 noon in the church sanctuary.
Interment will be in Biloxi National Cemetery with full U.S. Navy Honors.
