Charles "Charlie" Thomas Gillies, age 77, of Ocean Springs, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2019, after a long illness.
Charlie was a native of Oxford, Massachusetts, a long-time resident of Worcester, Massachusetts, and resident of Ocean Springs, since 2005. He was a graduate of Oxford High School in Oxford, Massachusetts. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1960-1966 on the USS Fulton, Submarine Tender. He worked for Colonial Press, J.S. Wesbys and Deerfield Press before retiring in 2004.
Charlie's many hobbies include: NASCAR and Xfinity racing, veterans affairs, cats, word searches and jigsaw puzzles, target shooting, RVing and auto travel, and cooking. He was a member of the USS Fulton Association, American Legion Post 42, Associate Member of Sub Vets, Tullibee Base, First Mississippi Company Jamestowne Society, The General Society of Mayflower Descendants, Son of a Witch, The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, General Society of the War of 1812, Clan MacPherson Association. His awards include; State of Georgia Certificate of Honor for Honorable Service during the Vietnam War Era, Certificate of Recognition during the Cold War, Certificate of Completion: Genealogy 101 - Discovering Our Ancestors, Tulane University Continuing Studies.
A major thrill of his life was driving a modified race car for 15 laps at the Thompson Connecticut Race Track. He loved attending auto races at New England Tracks, Daytona, Pocono, New Hampshire Speedway, and Talladega. He also toured Bristol, Daytona and Charlotte Motor Speedway.
He loved his cats and raised one, Lucky, from 3 1/2 weeks.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Violet (Mason) Gillies; his son, Paul Gillies; and his brother, Robert Gillies.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Klemetti Barrows Gillies; his daughter, Brenda Marie Rose; his son Christopher Gillies; grandchildren, Kristi Poske, Clifford Rose, Jr., and Kayla Rose; his sister, Linda Hartung (Geoffrey); his great-granddaughter, LillyAnah Rose; his great grandson, Buzzy Rose; three step-children, five step-grandchildren, and six step great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and six beloved cats.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Legion Post #42 - Ocean Springs, Jackson County Animal Shelter, Humane Society of the Gulf Coast, and U.S.S. Fulton Association.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 1, 2019, at 12:00pm, at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 13872 Lemoyne Blvd at Washington Ave, West Jackson County. Visitation will be from 10:00am - 12:00pm. Interment will be at the Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Ave, Paxton, MA 01612, at the convenience of the family.
