Charles Edward Barnes, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2024, in Gulfport, Mississippi, at the age of 96. Born on June 27, 1928, in Jay, Florida, Charles lived a life filled with devotion, service, and love that has left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Charles worked with the Merchant Marines and the South Pacific Railroad. He then proudly served his country in the U.S Army, dedicating 25 years of his life to military service, which included honorable participation in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. His unwavering commitment and sacrifice were recognized with multiple awards and medals throughout his career, a testament to his bravery and resilience.
Education was a milestone achievement in Charles’ life, as he proudly received his GED, reflecting his belief in the importance of learning and personal growth. His passion for life extended beyond the military; he had a particular fondness for sharing meals and experiences with others—a love that started with his first passion: cooking.
In addition to cooking, Charles found joy in a variety of hobbies that enriched his life. He cherished quiet moments spent fishing and hunting, relished the thrill of golfing, nurtured the earth through gardening, and cultivated a sense of adventure by traveling. Charles was also an avid collector of coins and stamps, always intrigued by the stories they told.
His legacy lives on through his dear family members. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Barnes, his children Nancy (Jeremy) Siegel and James (Maryam) Barnes, and his cherished grandchildren Jade Siegel, Jaxon Siegel, Pearce Barnes, and Paylin Barnes. He also leaves behind his sister, Edna Resedean, and brother-in-law, Bill Lewis, who will miss him dearly.
Charles was not only a dedicated family man but also a proud member of the Masons and Shriners, where he served three terms as grandmaster for the Kingston Lodge in New Mexico. His enduring commitment to community service and fellowship exemplified the values he cherished deeply.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Barnes; his mother, Iva Lee (Edward) Kennosky; and his sister, Jeanette Barnes. Though they are gone, their spirits will forever intertwine with the rich tapestry of memories that Charles created during his remarkable journey on this earth.
As we remember Charles Edward Barnes, we reflect on a life that was characterized by service, dedication, and a profound love for family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of memories, laughter, and compassion that will resonate within the hearts of many. His gentle spirit and love will continue to guide those he has left behind, as they celebrate a life well-lived.
'Our family will miss your soul forever. Thank you for all the love and wonderful memories you gave us. You will be forever in our hearts, until we meet again.'
Charles will be laid to rest with private family services with Full Military Honors to be conducted under the auspices of the US Army, in Dallas, TX.
