Charles Hamilton McCann, age 77, of Gulfport, died Thursday, April 29, 2010 in Biloxi.
Charles was born November 14, 1932 at King Daughters Hospital in Gulfport. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of the First Assembly of God in Gulfport.
Charles hobbies were camping, woodcrafting and travelling. His favorite hobby was camping out with his children and grandchildren in the Great Smoky Mountains. He and his wife travelled extensiveley in Europe beginning in 1984 when their son Chuck was stationed with the U.S. Army in Fulda, Germany. Then they visited their daughter Cheryl when her husband, Mike was stationed at Spangdahlem, Germany for several years. When Mike received orders to be among the first U.S. Air Force fighter jets to fly into Baghdad in the Gulf War, Cheryl already had two boys and was expecting her 3rd son. Charles went to be with Cheryl and help with the boys and was there for the birth.
During Charles' 35 years of service with the Gulfport and Biloxi VA Medical Centers, he received numerous performance and special contribution awards for outstanding service.
In the early 1960's he was Scout Master for young people at Gulfport Revival Center. Charles also volunteered many hours of service at the International Seaman Center in Gulfport.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James D. McCann and Ella Lovelace Stovall; his brothers, John, Edward and James McCann; and his sister, Lucille Robison. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Kathleen McCann; daughter, Phyllis Hollins (Johnny) of Perkinston; daughter, Cheryl Deas (Michael Wayne) of Dallas, GA; son, Charles """"Chuck"""" McCann, Jr. (Renata) of Tallahassee, FL; 6 grandchildren, Michelle Latch of New Albany, Angela Latch of Booneville, Jason Deas, serving in the U.S. Air Force, Jeremy Deas of Dallas, GA, Nathan Deas of Dallas, GA, and Janko McCann of Tallahassee; 3 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Easley (Bill) of Pearland, TX.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m., Monday, May 3, 2010 with the funeral service at 11 a.m., all at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. The online guestbook may be viewed and signed at www.riemannfamily.com.
