Dr. Charles A. Angel, (Doc) age 86, of Gulfport died Sunday, August 30, 2009. He had been living at Canon Hospice for the past eight weeks. He was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Beverly, parents William and Martha, two sisters, Geraldine and Lolene, brother, Bill; former wife, Valary Morrison, daughter, Pamela Hill, and his son-in-law, Mitch Kiser.
Survivors include many friends and family including his brother James, daughter Amy Angel and her husband Michael Martin of Gulfport, daughter Mary Miller and her husband Joel Sweat of Long Beach, CA, sons, David Holleman, Mike Holleman, of Gulfport, Tim Holleman and his wife Lisa, of Gulfport, Dean Holleman and his wife Laurie, of Gulfport; his daughter Diane Kiser of Gulfport; grandchildren, Chris Holleman and his wife Emily, Sarah Gant Holleman, Dean Holleman, Hollis Holleman, Addie Holleman, Matthew Holleman, and Boyce Holleman.
Dr. Angel was born in Lockney, TX and grew up in Plainview, TX. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving as a Navy pilot who landed on aircraft carriers in Asia. Dr. Angel met his first wife, Valary, while serving in the Navy. He married Valary in 1946 and fathered three children (Pamela, Amy, and Mary) with her.
Dr. Angel completed his undergraduate studies and Master's degree at Texas Tech, receiving his B.S. in 1948 and his M.S. in 1949. He financed his own education by working multiple jobs, including a role at the Kraft Cheese factory. He was awarded his degree of Doctor of Philosophy with a major in Biochemistry and Nutrition by the University of Texas, Medical Branch at Galveston in 1954. He had a long and distinguished career beginning in 1957 as Chief of Research for the Gulfport VA Hospital. He transferred to the Little Rock, Arkansas VA Hospital in 1973 and ultimately retired in 1983. In additional, he was on the faculty of Tulane University Medical School, holding positions as Lecturer in Biochemistry and Research Consultant in Psychiatry. From 1953 to 1956 he also held the position of Associate Professor of Physiological Chemistry at the University of Mississippi Medical School.
Doc was an avid golfer, and loved to fish. He was known to be a real charmer, and could dance up a storm. He will be remembered by all for his good-natured outlook on life, even throughout his final days.
The family would like to thank Dr. Pande, Dr. Bethala, Dr. Nalluri, and most of all Rose George for all of their special care over these last several years, as well as the staff at Canon Hospice and Loyalton for making his last years more comfortable.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Rd., Gulfport, from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM.
A memorial service will follow at 6:00 PM in the funeral home chapel.
