Cerré Born aÌ‚â‚Å“Buddyâ₝ Diboll, Jr., age 78, died Friday, November 28, 2008 after a long battle with cancer. He died at home in Pass Christian with his family around him. Buddy was a native of New Orleans, and lived there until he and his wife moved to Pass Christian permanently in 1995. They built a beach house in the Pass in 1972 and spent a great deal of time with their family there.
BuddyaÌ‚â‚â„¢s parents were Cerré Born Diboll, Sr. and Beverly Wright Diboll of New Orleans. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joanna Lipp Diboll, three children and two grandsons. They are Alison Joanna Diboll of San Francisco, David Cerré Diboll of San Diego, and Michele Diboll Hoeser, her husband Vince Patrick Hoeser, and their sons Camden Cerré and Miles Burgess Hoeser of Lafayette, California. He is also survived by his brother, Donald Wright Diboll, now of Clovis, California and his nephew Donald Collins Diboll, also of Clovis.
Buddy attended Louisiana State University, where he pledged Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He received his B.A. degree from Tulane University. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Japan for a year and a half.
A professional scale model builder for more than 50 years, Buddy completed his last model, a large drilling rig for Taylor Energy, in 2008. Buddy worked exclusively on commissioned models, focusing on marine, legal and architectural subjects. These included models of the Superdome, drilling rigs for oil companies, legal models for court cases and models of New Orleans and nearby coastal areas. Buddy also built models for use in Hollywood movies, including the model of Dealy Plaza for aÌ‚â‚Å“J.F.K.â₝ BuddyaÌ‚â‚â„¢s models are currently housed in institutions including the Smithsonian Institute, the New York Yacht Club, the London Royal Thames Yacht Club and the Gulf Coast Maritime Museum. His work has been recognized with television, newspaper, and magazine coverage.
In Pass Christian, Buddy was a member of the Pass Christian Yacht Club, was on the Board of Trustees of the Pass Christian Historical Society, was a founding member of the Lighthouse and Tricentennial Committees, was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, and was active in other organizations.
In New Orleans, he was a member of the Southern Yacht Club, Friends of the Cabildo, an honorary member of Save Our Cemeteries, member of The Historic New Orleans Collection, alumni president of SAE fraternity, a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and a former vice-president of Trinity Episcopal School Parents Group.
An avid fisherman in Gulf waters, BuddyaÌ‚â‚â„¢s young grandsons said, aÌ‚â‚Å“Gangyâ₝
is probably already fishing in his favorite fishing hole.â₝
A memorial service will be held at Oak Crest Mansion, 5267 Menge Avenue in Pass Christian at 2 p. m. on Tuesday, December 2. This will be followed by a reception in the same location. There is on-site parking and a handicapped ramp available. The service will be conducted by the Reverend Christopher Colby of Trinity Episcopal Church in Pass Christian.
