Cathy Thornton Miller, age 60 of Gulfport, passed away at home on Sunday evening, June 13, 2010, following a courageous five-year battle with ocular melanoma secondary liver cancer.
Born in Raleigh, MS, Cathy grew up in Gulfport and graduated from Gulfport High School in 1967. She recently retired as an Inventory Management Specialist and Program Analyst for the Biloxi VA pharmacy. With a distinguished service period of 30 plus years, Cathy felt that her greatest personal achievement at the VA was knowing that she was helping the men and women who have nobly served her country.
A selfless and compassionate person, family and friends knew her to be a kind, considerate, and spiritual person who always had a kind word for everyone and brought out the best in others. Even with her own illness, Cathy was more concerned about others than she was about herself. An inspiration to all who knew her, CathyaÌââ¢s bravery, generosity of spirit and kind heart have made the world a much better place.
Cathy is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, William C. aÌâÅBillaÌâ Miller, CWO5 U.S. Army (Retired) of Gulfport; parents, Lillian and John Thornton of Gulfport; brother, David Thornton of Nashville; sister, Theresa (Rusty) Richardson of Gulfport; mother-in-law, Mrs. Curtis B. Miller of Gulfport; sister-in-law, Carolyn Miller Fayard of Gulfport; and nieces, nephews, and friends. Cathy is preceded in death by her sister, Debbie Thornton.
CathyaÌââ¢s life will be celebrated by friends and family on Friday, June 18, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at Bayou View Baptist Church in Gulfport. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:30 a.m. until service time.
Interment will be at Biloxi National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to St. Jude ChildrenaÌââ¢s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the charity of oneaÌââ¢s choice.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the Hospice staff at Memorial Hospital, Dr. Pande and staff, the staff at Memorial HospitalaÌââ¢s Oncology Unit, and the doctors at the melanoma clinics of Mayo and MD Anderson Hospitals, as well as those individuals who have blessed Cathy with their love, prayers and concern during this most difficult time.
