Carol F. Schutzmann, 81, of Long Beach, beloved wife, mother, sister, piano teacher, and friend to many, passed away peacefully at home on September 19, 2018, surrounded by her loving children.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Roy Louis Schutzmann; their son, Michael Schutzmann; her parents, William and Mary Schroeder; and her brother, Bill Schroeder.
Survivors include six children: Karen Schutzmann Welborn (Ken) of Stamford, CT, and children Kenny, Joy, Katherine, Olivia, Jonathan, Zachary, and Lydia; Katherine Schutzmann Biggs (Tom), of Houston, TX; Karl Schutzmann (Pamela) of Pensacola Beach, FL, and children Ryan and Morgan; Kurt Schutzmann (Cecille) of Tiburon, CA, and children Jessica and Gabriel; Eric Schutzmann of New Orleans, LA; Roy Matthew Schutzmann of Long Beach, and daughter Rileigh; seven siblings, Betty Harper, Jane Couvillion, Evelyn Schroeder, Ann (Al) Hassenboehler, Brenda McNamara, Elsa (John) Hodges, and Eric (Judy) Schroeder. She also cherished her friends, especially her friend of 56 years, Dolores Snow (Long Beach).
Carol was born July 28, 1937, in New Orleans (NOLA) and baptized at Holy Trinity Church. She attended St. Rose de Lima grade school, Dominican High School, and received a BA in English from Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL, and Loyola University in NOLA. After teaching high school English in NOLA for a year, Carol married Roy and they lived briefly in Savannah, GA, before settling in Long Beach in 1960 and becoming life-long parishioners of St. Thomas Catholic Church. Her love of family was most important to her, always. She also loved music, taking piano lessons for 12 years and ultimately teaching piano on the Gulf Coast for 34 years. Carol dearly loved her students. Another great joy was accompanying the St. Thomas children and adult choirs. Carol was a leader in the Gulf Coast and Mississippi Music Teachers Associations. In 1988 she was the first piano teacher in Mississippi to successfully complete the requirements for "professional certification by examination" through the Music Teachers National Association, and in 2007 was honored as a MTNA Foundation Fellow. She loved crossword puzzles and baking and distributing bread (especially to the Biloxi VA.)
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Thomas Music Ministry to specifically benefit her beloved Adult and Children's Choirs.
Visitation will be 9:30-11am Saturday, September 22, 2018 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Long Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am, followed by burial in Long Beach Cemetery. Immediately after, family and friends are invited to a celebration of her life at her home.
