Carl Flaspoller Flettrich, age 75 of Pass Christian, passed away at home February 16, 2024, after a long-fought courageous battle with chronic health issues.
Carl is survived by his loving wife, Doris Brewer Flettrich; his two daughters, Annie Flettrich LaRocque (Mike) and Erica Flettrich Thorne. He was most proud of his two grandchildren, Sadie Ferguson Thorne (Sewanee University ‘24) and Thomas Whitmell “Harriss” Thorne IV (Rollins College ‘27).
He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Carolyn Walls Flettrich; his niece Katharine Flettrich Leggio (Darrell); his nephew and godchild, Kyle Garland Flettrich (Caroline) of Baton Rouge, LA; as well as several close cousins and friends.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin “Al” Schaaf Flettrich and Ada Shelby (Flaspoller) Flettrich; and most recently, his brother, Alvin “Al” Schaaf Flettrich, Jr.
As a native New Orleanian, Carl graduated from St. Martin’s Episcopal School (Class of ’66) and served as alumni board president 1989-92. Carl’s college career was spent between Louisiana Tech University and Tulane University earning degrees in both history, civil and structural engineering.
He remains a proud brother of the Kappa Sigma fraternity at Louisiana Tech, where he was affectionately known as “Happy.” He continued to carry on traditions of the brotherhood as a mentor for the chapter for several years after graduation. Happy annually convened with his brothers for a memorial golf tournament and always enjoyed a good laugh with his dearest brother, John Luck of Shreveport, LA.
Carl was a well-known civil and structural engineer in New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast for 30 years, representing N-Y Associates, Inc. One of his most notable projects that withstood Hurricane Katrina at the Port of Gulfport was the Bulk Ore Unloading Storage Tanks and Rail Loading Facilities. Prior to retiring, he was recognized in his management role with Prime AE. In this role, he was presented with the Group Achievement Award from NASA for outstanding performance in engineering assessment, design, and construction management for the B-2 Project at Stennis Space Center.
Carl also contributed to his community throughout the years with countless volunteer hours. He reigned as St. Paul’s Carnival Association, King Christian LIV (1984); followed by managing and producing the Pass Christian Seafood Festival; volunteered as the President of the St. Paul’s Catholic School Board; long standing board member of the Pass Christian Isles Golf Club and a member of the Pass Christian Yacht Club.
He was lovingly known as “Papa” by many family members and friends. Papa made sure he had a front-row seat for every special moment in Sadie and Harriss’ lives. He cherished every minute with laughter and love. Carl was an avid golfer, enjoyed a good game of cards, and was always telling a good joke!
In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates your contribution to a charity of your choice in memory of Carl.
