Calvin Edsel Vogle, 86, went home to be with the Lord, on Saturday, April 25th. He passed away peacefully into eternal life with his family by his side at his home.
He attended Success School from first to twelfth grade, graduating high school in 1951. For college he would attend MGCCC, Perkinston campus where he met his wife, Muriel, of 65 years. Calvin and Muriel were married July 23rd, 1954. Shortly after, he answered the call of duty and joined the United States Army, in the Screaming Eagles Battalion, during the Korean conflict.
After his deployment in Japan, he returned and completed his bachelor’s degree in education at the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg Campus, in 1959. From September 1959 through March 1961 he went on to teach high school history and drivers’ education at St. Martin. Upon taking the United States Postal Service exam in October of 1960, he received his appointment for rural Saucier Route One on April 1, 1961. He served the community of Saucier proudly for 31 years, first as a letter carrier before being appointed postmaster, and retiring in 1992.
Calvin enjoyed hunting the local game, fishing on Toledo Bend and other local honey holes, he was an avid reader of western books, and an imaginative storyteller. He enjoyed going on family trips but was soon ready to go home. Calvin loved to cook for his family and friends and was famous for his gumbo. He was a member of Poplar Head United Methodist Church, held multiple leadership positions and was a founding member of the Men's Bible Study. He loved this group for the unique way they shared their thoughts on the Bible study for the day, and fellowship. Calvin was a 50 year plus member of the J L Power Lodge F&AM Masonic Order in Perkinston, Mississippi and also, a member of the Perkinston Chapter #376 Order of Eastern Star.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Trenton Vogle, Margaret Josephine (Turan) Vogle, brother Richard Vogle, sister Betty (Vogle) Davis, son-in-law Michael Cannady, and favorite dog, Tinker Bell.
He is survived by his wife, Muriel (Oehler) Vogle; his children, Stephen (Peggy) Vogle, Catherine Vogle Cannady, William (Stephanie) Vogle, Julianna (Orlando) Vogle Gallego, Cynthia Vogle Ladnier, and Patricia (Kevin) Vogle Hubbard; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Alton Vogle.
He blessed us with many precious memories that will always be in our hearts and he will be greatly missed.
