Betty Irene Galvin

October 25, 1922 — July 16, 2012

Betty Irene Berger Galvin, age 89, passed away July 16, 2012 in Long Beach, MS. She was born on October 25, 1922 in Ferris, IL. Betty was the first cheerleader at Carthage High School. She received a Bachelor's of Art degree in Economics and Social Science from the University of Chicago. She also received a Master's of Science degree in Education from Northern Illinois University.
She taught kindergarten through junior high school in Illinois, Texas, Missouri, and Alaska. She retired in 1984 in Illinois. After she retired, she spent 3 months traveling in Egypt, Kenya, and Europe. She had a variety of jobs in advertising and sales for local radio stations in Carthage and at the Joliet Army Ammo Plant.
Her interests were astronomy, geology, and local Indians. She authored several books ranging from Egypt to education to politics.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William E. and Ethel Berger; sister, Helen Berger; and former husband, Patrick J. Galvin.
Survivors include her son, Patrick Galvin of Waveland, MS and her daughter, Diane Thomson of Biloxi. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Jessica Seymour and Heather Wopat; great grandson, Jake Seymour; and brother, William Berger of Austin, TX.
A graveside service will be held at a later date at Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage, IL.
