Betty D'Aquilla

September 21, 1937 — August 20, 2018

Betty D'Aquilla was called home to the Lord on August 20, 2018.  She was born on September 21, 1937, and spent her childhood in Pascagoula, MS.  After graduating from high school in 1955, she attended University of Southern Mississippi, where she was a three-time graduate. She earned an undergraduate degree in elementary education and then became one of the first teachers in the state obtaining a master's degree in Special Education.  Betty also earned a master's degree and AAA certification in administration. She taught in the Harrison County and Gulfport school districts before moving to Long Beach in 1970. She later became the Director of Special Education, serving the Long Beach School District for 18 years. She was appointed President of the Mississippi Association of Children with Learning Disabilities and Mississippi Association of Educators. Betty was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society for Educators and was a member of the local chapter of Altrusa.  Additionally, she was a charter member and Flag Officer of the Long Beach Yacht Club.
Betty loved her family, friends, gardening, baseball, reading, and her puppy.  She was a great cook, loved shopping, was stylish, professional, and had a very outgoing personality.  In retirement, Betty loved her garden and was an active member in the Long Beach Garden Club.  She became a member of the First United Methodist Church upon moving to Long Beach and was an active member in the Oaks Fellowship, Polly Mincher Circle, and attended South Mississippi Methodist Cursillo.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Lyda Peak; ex-husband and friend, Sylvester John D'Aquilla, Jr.  She is survived by her brother, John Peak; daughters, Rose Pouriraji (Moe), Holly Murray, Daphne Stewart (Tim), Carroll Campbell, and Abbey D'Aquilla; grandchildren, Katherine Orgeron (David), Alexis Pouriraji, Lyda and Madelyn Murray, Dylan, Tyler and Kyle Stewart, and great granddaughter, Parvane' Orgeron; and loyal companion, Bubba Bear.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 25, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church of Long Beach, with visitation for family and friends from 12:30 PM until the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Methodist Women's Organization or the Good Samaritan fund with the Long Beach Methodist Church.
