Betty Smith Cuevas, age 83, passed away on April 6, 2009.
Mrs. Cuevas was born in Swindon, Wiltshire, England. She was very active in school sports and several organizations during her school years in England. She loved singing in the All Saints Church Choir and the Swindon Philharmonic Symphony Choir. She was a member of the British Red Cross and worked in Potterne Military Hospital during World War II. After she became a war bride and moved to America, she worked as a nurse for several years. When she retired from nursing, she worked as a secretary for an architect and engineer and later as a secretary for Lizana Elementary School. She attended St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lizana where she was a member of the choir for many years and later a choir director.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius Cuevas, her parents, Herbert and Meta Smith, and her brother, Raymond Smith.
She is survived by her six children; David Cuevas, Marian (Curtis) Alexander Raymond (Dena) Cuevas, Julie (John) Steube, Kathy Martin, and Travis (Tammy) Cuevas, all of Saucier, MS; thirteen grandchildren, Gary (Cindy) Cuevas of Manassas, VA, Matthew Cuevas of Gulfport, MS, Brett (Annie) Cuevas of Alexandria, VA, Michelle Cuevas of Deerfield Beach, FL, Kurt and Kent Alexander, Christina and John Steube, Jared Martin, Ashley and Alissa Cuevas, and step-grandchildren, Chelsea and Hannah Martin, all of Saucier, and on great step-grandchild, Andrew Wofford of Manassas, VA. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Sue Smith, and nephew, John (Brenda) Smith, two great nephews, Joseph (Sadie) Smith and Steven (Liza) Smith, and their precious children, all of Swindon, England.
Betty was a loving and devoted mother and Christian, She will be greatly missed.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 5:00 PM, Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lizana, 23529 Highway 53, where friends may visit one hour prior to the mass. Burial will follow at the Cuevas Family Cemetery.
