Bessie Ikerd Waller departed this life on May 17, 2009. She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana 89 years ago on January 22, 1920 to the late Millard Ikerd, Jr. and Lena Gollott Ikerd.
The majority of her life was spent on the Coast, attending school in Long Beach, and living in Gulfport for the rest of her life.
Predeceasing her was her husband, David Floyd Waller; her four brothers, Millard, Donald, James and Alonzo Ikerd.
Surviving are her children, Myrna W. Cody and David E. Waller, Gulfport. She had the following grandchildren: Randy Cody, Rhonda Cody, Gulfport and Karen Redmon of Saucier. Great-grandchildren are Ryan Cody, New York City; Chase Randazzo, Ocean Springs; Raegan Randazzo, Virginia Beach; Conrad Morris, Gulfport; Molly Morris, Gulfport, and one great-great-grandchild, Zelie A. Cody, New York City.
Bessie was a member of Grace Memorial Baptist Church in Gulfport.
She worked early on at the Mack-Smith Garment Factory in Gulfport, Hardy Court Nursery for children and spent 30 years working in the Gulfport school cafeterias. She was the first lunch room manager at Gulfport East High School and worked her last few years at Anniston Elementary School.
AlzheimeraÌââ¢s Disease consumed about fifteen years of BessieaÌââ¢s life but she succumbed to a heart attack.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Southern Care Hospice, Kare in Home, the staff at the emergency room and the fourth floor of Memorial Hospital at Gulfport. A very special thanks also to Doris, our angel. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport from 11 a.m. to the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Evergreen Gardens in Gulfport.
