Bernadette Havens Smith, age 84, and a resident of Gulfport, died Friday, October 12, 2007 in Gulfport, surrounded by her famiy.
Bernadette was born December 1, 1922, in Cottage Hill, Alabama. She had been a resident of Gulfport since 1952. She worked part-time with her late husband, Arthur W. Smith, at Western Auto in downtown Gulfport until the store closed in April 1986. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in downtown Gulfport.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter M. and Marion Estella Noel Havens of Cottage Hill, AL; her brother, Army Air Corps Lieutenant James T. Havens of Cottage Hill, AL; her sister, Beatrice Havens Randolph of Chico, CA; her husband, Arthur W. Smith, originally from Walker, LA; and granddaughter, Kelly Ann Smith of Gulfport.
She is survived by her five sons, James A. (Mary Ann) of Gulfport, Father Jacob-Matthew (Jerry), Franciscan Monastery, Washington, D.C., Walter E. (Vicki) of Gulfport, William D. (Cherish) of Gulfport, and Richard B. (Jayne) of Saucier; three daughters, Charlene M. Linch (Bill) of Ocean Springs, Brenda S. Chapman of Gulfport, and Carolyn Renee Peters (Dan) of Gulfport; nineteen grandchildren, William Vernon Smith, Genna Smith, Jamie Olson (Ed), Brandi Mallette (Chris), Bridgette Finch (Chris), Chad Goss (Caren), Greg Goss (Mercedes), Michelle Lammel (Matt), Ashley Chapman, Walter Jason Smith, Jonathan Smith, Steven Coblentz, Madalyn Smith, Justin Loper, Amanda Loper, Travis Peters, Gina Lizana (Chad), Laura Tomlinson (Stuart), and Brian Reeves; and twenty great-grandchildren, James Brandon Smith, Marahlyn Reyna, Hayden and Addison Olson, Jessie, Morgan and Sidney Mallette, Amber and Zachary Tice and Jaycie Finch, Ciarra Goss, Lauren Melah and Hailey Austin, Rebeca and Andrew Goss, Jayden Smith, Kane Loper, Tyler Helton, and Chase and Emily Lizana. The family would like to extend a sincere thanks to longtime friend and neighbor Ruth Krause.
A Mass of Christian Burial will on Monday, October 15, 2007 at 2:00 PM at St John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Gulfport, where friends may call from noon until service time. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Gulfport.
