Arthur Platts

Arthur William Platts, Jr., age 92, of Gulfport, passed away on May 3, 2017.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur W. and Dorothy Kenesson Platts; his siblings, Florence Bass, Dot Blevins, Betty Jo Roberson, Carrie Jane Rester, Mary Lou Gum, Kenneth L. Platts, and Fred H. Platts.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 65 years, Mary Kate Moore Platts; his children, Arthur William "Will" Platts, III, Lark (Paul) Bennett, and Melanie (Hewson) Lynch; his grandchildren, Jeremy, Ryan, Shantel, Casey, and Ian; his great-grandchildren, Haleigh, Peyton, Carter, Stella, and Luke; his devoted K9 "Lilly;" brother-in-law and dear friend, Donald Gum and sister-in-law, Janie Estes; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mr. Platts was a 1943 graduate of Gulfport High School and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II serving in the South Pacific and was a plank holder on the USS James E. Kyes (DD787). After his discharge, he worked at Ashton's Food Store in Gulfport and later worked at the Navy SeaBee Base retiring in 1989 as Traffic Officer after 41 years of service. Art was a grand storyteller, professional bargain shopper, bird lover, fisherman, coffee drinker, and green thumbed gardener. Mr. Platts was of the Methodist faith and was a charter member of the Men's Camellia Club and a very active member of the National Defense Transportation Association.
Visitation will be Monday, May 8, 2017, from 2:30 pm - 4 pm at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Rd, Gulfport. A memorial service will be at 4 pm in the funeral home chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to be sent to Pink Hearts Funds, 5095 Beatline Road, Long Beach, MS 39560.
The family wishes to express their gratitude and deep appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Biloxi VA Medical Center Acute Care and Niagra Unit for their compassionate loving care for an "old sailor" and his family.
