Arnold “Gus” Gustafson passed away peacefully at home with his wife at his side on Friday, August 20, 2021. He was born on November 11, 1936, in Port Sulphur, LA to the late Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Alfred Gustafson (Agnes Hunter Howie). He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ellen Gustafson; son, Eric Arnold Gustafson; brother, Robert Howie Gustafson; and sister, Margaret Gustafson Colomb (Herman “Hokie” Colomb).
Gus is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alice Diane Brogdon Gustafson; daughters, Karen L. Gustafson Good (Wade), and Margaret Alice Gustafson Valdin (Henri); son, Jon Brogdon Gustafson (Kelli); grandchildren, Sean Michael Self (Stacy), Lindsay Margaret Gustafson, Ann Brogdon Gustafson, Evan Good, Andrew Good, and Monique Valdin; great grandson, Oliver Self.
Gus attended Tulane University and affiliated with Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He received his BSME from Mississippi State University and his master’s from Loyola University. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in both LA and MS. His career started with Boeing in Seattle, WA as a Mechanical Design Engineer and after he was transferred to New Orleans as Facilities Planner, Transportation and Handling Supervisor. He was listed in the Boeing Roll of Honor for the Apollo/Saturn Mission and included for his outstanding contribution to America’s first Lunar Landing. This book is housed in the Library of Congress/Smithsonian Institute. He continued at Michoud with Martin Marietta Aerospace in New Orleans where the Space Shuttle External Fuel Tanks were assembled. Gus was a Manager of Facilities, Project Manager for Martin Marietta and he received the Snoopy Award from NASA during this time, prior to his diagnosis with MS.
The Memorial Service will be held on Monday, August 30, 2021, at the Diamondhead Community Church, 5301 Diamondhead Circle, Diamondhead, MS at 3:00 PM, with the visitation for family and friends beginning at 2:00 PM, with the Rev. Jason Edward officiation. Interment will be at a later date in Slidell, LA.
