Angeline C. "Angie" Fortenberry, age 97, of Gulfport, went home to God on March 9, 2019.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leston Fortenberry; a son, Rodney Fortenberry; her parents, John E. and Georgia Canell; and a sister, Mary.
She is survived by her sons, Gary Fortenberry (Melba) and Steven Fortenberry (Cathy); a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth "Murph" Fortenberry; a sister-in-law, Yoko Fortenberry; 7 grandchildren, Cary Fortenberry, Steve Fortenberry, Jeffrey Fortenberry, Angie Larson, Matthew Fortenberry, Kathyrn Walters, and Rhyne Roberts; 16 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Fortenberry was a native of Seattle, WA and has lived most of her life on the coast. She was a graduate of Franklin High School in Seattle and later graduated from the Edison Vocational School in Seattle with a degree in dressmaking. She was the first female from Seattle to join the Army Air Corps. While in the Air Corps, she worked as a Dental Technician and she received the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gulfport where she was very involved teaching Sunday School and Bible School. She was a den mother for her son's Boy Scout troop, and later volunteered in Mrs. Wagner's first grade class at St. Thomas School and later at St. Vincent de Paul School. Her contributions to the church and the children at school will be cherished for years to come.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Gulfport Care Center for their care and concern of Mrs. Fortenberry. Also, a special thanks to Megan, Bridey, and Hannah Walters and Faith, Hope, and Alice Ponte for their regular visits to the Care Center to sing and visit with Mrs. Fortenberry and the other residents.
Visitation will be on Friday, March 15, 2019, from 9:30 am - 11 am at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, MS. The funeral service will be at 11 am in the chapel. Entombment will be Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
