Andrew Lizana, 79, of the Catholic faith, and a life-long resident of Bay St. Louis, passed away on Friday, July 24, 2009, after a lengthy bout with cancer.
A father of eleven children, he is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Betty; his children Andre', Terri, Guy, Michelle, Donna, Danita, Marie, Marguerite, Mark, and Don; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alphonse and Oceola; his brothers, Alphonse and Edward; his sister, Imelda; and one son, Edward Anthony.
Andrew was a carpenter for many years at Saint Augustine Seminary and later used his talents to make and donate items to St. Rose de Lima Parish fairs. He also served as an auxiliary policeman and firefighter for the city of Bay St. Louis, later becoming the 1st African American fire chief. As fire chief, he chaired the doll and toy fund for several years, collecting donations and distributing gifts to needy families during the Christmas season.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at St. Rose de Lima Catholic Church, where friends may visit two hours prior. Burial will follow at St. Marys Cemetery, next to St. Rose de Lima Catholic Church on Necaise Ave., in Bay St. Louis.
