Amelia Lumpkin

Amelia S. Lumpkin, age 91 and a resident of Long Beach, MS, passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2007, in San Antonio, TX, where she had moved after losing her home in Hurricane Katrina.
Mrs. Lumpkin was preceded in death by her parents, Reuben and Mary Delphine Spiers; her husband, Coach Lance Lumpkin; and her sister, Ethel Vaughn of Picayune.
She is survived by her sisters, Mae Lee of Pensacola and Ann Seal of Hattiesburg; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Born in Enterprise, MS, on April 19, 1916, Amelia grew up in the Picayune area and graduated from Picayune High School. Living with an aunt, she attended junior college in Long Beach, CA, returned to Mississippi for one year at WomenaÌ‚â‚â„¢s College in Hattiesburg (now William Carey College), and completed her final 2 years at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, TX, graduating magna cum laude with a degree in English and Business Administration. Following graduation, she taught at Pearl River Central High School and at a school in Hattiesburg.
She had known Lance Lumpkin for years and began dating the young coach while teaching at Pearl River Central. They married in 1941 and moved to Long Beach, where he began a long career coaching football in Long Beach and Bay St. Louis.
In 1943, Amelia became executive secretary to the president of Gulf Park College and eventually was named Director of Admissions. She worked at Gulf Park for 25 years until her retirement in 1968. Amelia remained active in the Gulf Park alumnae association until her death.
Amelia was also a member of the Long Beach Historical Society and was active in the Eastern Star Chapter 306, where she served as Worthy Matron. She also served as Grand Marshall and Grand Martha under the Grand Chapter of MS, was the Grand Representative to Kansas and Idaho, and participated on numerous committees in the Grand Chapter. She was District Deputy Grand Marshall of the First District (Coast Area).
She was an active member of the Long Beach First Baptist Church and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She participated in a bridge group at the Senior Citizen Center and enjoyed water therapy classes at Flexfit.
Funeral services will be held at the Long Beach First United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, July 31, 2007. A brief visitation will precede the service at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow in the Carriere Cemetery.
