Alison Jeanne Free, 60, passed away February 14 at the Plaza Community Living Center in Pascagoula, MS after a long illness.
Alison was the daughter of the late Charles H. and Dama R. Free of Long Beach, MS. An active and prolific artist, Alison worked as a painter and historic preservationist prior to a 1990 accident, which left her disabled. She was well known for her scenic paintings of the Gulf Coast and the Southern Appalachians and for architectural portraits of historic buildings throughout the Southeast. Her restoration of original Coca-Cola wall signs in Georgia was documented in a feature article in the New York Times.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Dama Schneider of Charlottesville, VA, and son Brian Longo of Gulfport, MS, her sister Dr. Kathleen D. Free of Charlottesville, VA, her brother, Charles Scott Free of Barrington, RI, nephews Todd and Cass Kawecki, nieces Christine and Francie Free and a great niece Sophia Kawecki.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, March 6, 2010 at First United Methodist Church of Long Beach at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The USM Foundation, 118 College Drive, Box 10026 Hattiesburg, MS 39406
designated to: The Riddick-Free Family Endowed Scholarship.
