Alice Gwendolyn Blackman (Mrs. Marcus J.) Broadus was born in Charleston, S.C, on February 17, 1917 and passed away in Arnaudville, LA on April 17, 2008. She was the youngest child of Malcolm Lee Blackman and Alice Rowena Lewis Blackman.
Gwen, as she was known by her many friends, was a lifelong learner and was involved in education for most of her life. She was valedictorian of her high school graduating class and also graduated with honors from the University of Alabama.
She began her teaching career in Cottonwood , AL and after she married Marcus Broadus, her high school sweetheart, after the war and settled in Arlington, TX, she owned a kindergarten until she and Marcus and the children moved back to MS. She began teaching in the Biloxi school system in 1952 and retired after 30 years of service. She continued substitute teaching for many years after she """"retired."""" One of her greatest joys was that she had the privilege of teaching the children of some of her former first grade students.
Gwen also had a love for playing the piano and organ and shared her talents as church organist and pianist at Success Baptist Church for many years.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Marcus J. Broadus, sister Marylee Blackman Windsor and brother, Lieutenant Lewis Blackman. She is survived by her children, Marcia Broadus Jones of Houston, TX, Marvin Broadus of Gulf Shores, AL and Melvin Broadus of Gulfport, MS and nieces Merilyn Windsor Varn of Ajijic, MX and Judith Windsor Moore of Cincinnati, OH and their children and grandchildren.
There will be a graveside service at the Broadus family cemetery at the family homestead on Bethel Rd. off Hwy. 67, Saucier, MS. on Sat. April 19 at 3:00 PM.
