A. D. ""Doug"" Hendon, Jr., age 78, well known Gulf Coast broadcaster and college instructor, died February 27, 2011, in Long Beach, MS.
He was born May 25, 1932, in Gulfport, MS, and was a lifelong resident of Long Beach. He attended Long Beach schools and graduated in 1951. He was a U. S. Army veteran and served during the Korean War. Mr. Hendon graduated in 1956 from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS, with a Broadcasting Degree and later received his Master's Degree.
In communications, Mr. Hendon was a radio broadcaster for radio stations in Louisiana and on the Mississippi Gulf Coast prior to beginning a career as an instructor at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Jefferson Davis Campus. He retired in 1991.
Doug was a lifetime member of the Long Beach Presbyterian Church, where he served as a ruling Elder, Deacon, and President of the Men of the Church. He was a charter member of the Long Beach Historical Society, writing frequently about early Long Beach.
He was preceded in death by his parents, A. D. Hendon, Sr. and Agnes Genung Hendon; and two brothers, Edwin ""Shorty"" Hendon, and Randy Hendon.
Survivors include his wife, Cindy Sizemore Hendon; son, Michael Douglas Hendon and wife, Jill; daughter, Laura Ann Dykes and husband, Matthew; a grandson, Noah Michael Hendon; sister-in-law, Dolores Reinike Hendon; cousins, Joanne Busby and Carol Kennedy, both of Dallas, TX; nephews, Steven, Gregory, and Eric; and two nieces, Lisa and Gretchen, of Little Rock, AR.

Visitation will be at Long Beach Presbyterian Church on Thursday, March 3, 2011, from 12:00 p.m. until the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be held in the Long Beach City Cemetery. The Rev. Louis Lohan will officiate with the Reverend Rob Butler assisting as Host Pastor.
Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11213 Three Rivers Road in Gulfport, is in charge of arrangements.
