Roderick Newell

Dr. Roderick Gray Newell, 62, of Long Beach, Mississippi, peacefully completed his long and winding journey at home on Sunday, December 1, 2013.
Roderick was born on September 7, 1951 in Meridian, MS. He graduated from Meridian Senior High School in 1969, earned a B.S. in Science in 1973 from Mississippi State University, and M.D. in 1984 from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. Roderick was a complex character of intelligence, charm, and wit. He was a scientist, artist, tinkerer, philosopher-poet, and arguably the world's greatest Grateful Dead groupie.
Roderick was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. William Elmo Newell and Luna Gray Newell, and his brother Wayne Newell of Meridian, MS.
Roderick will be missed by his family, Jane Guice and Ashlynn Kelly, son William Brock Newell, grandson William Isaac Newell, and daughter Sarah Elizabeth Brock. He is survived by his sister, Joy Whitlock and niece Tamara Brock.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2013, at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, from 12 o'clock Noon until 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Grateful Dead's at www.RexFoundation.org
